Griesalp

At the farthest end of the Kiental, Griesalp can be reached by a post bus route offering spectacular scenery against the backdrop of the Blüemlisalp massif. Griesalp is an ideal starting point for many hikes, for example over the Hohtürli to Kandersteg or over the Sefinenfurgge to Mürren.
The farthest end of the Kiental became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Jungfrau–Aletsch–Bietschhorn in 2004. Griesalp is situated in this natural paradise of clear mountain streams and waterfalls, flower-dotted meadows, shady mountain forests and snow-capped peaks.

The postbus route with the steepest gradient in Europe takes 45 minutes to reach Griesalp from its starting point at Reichenbach in Kandertal at the entrance to the Kiental, via Kiental village. A gradient of up to 28% is overcome on the stretch through the Pochten Gorge. The landscape gradually changes from gently undulating to high Alpine.

There are several mountain inns and hotels at Griesalp, for instance the Hotelzentrum, the nearby Berggasthaus Golderli, the Naturfreundehaus Gorneren and the Berggasthaus Bundalp, just over an hour on foot from Griesalp postbus end terminus on the Hohtürli pass traversal to Kandersteg.

The Alpine farming and nature theme path (with Alpine dairy and cheese-making) in the Griesalp, Bundalp and Steinenberg area is ideal for half or whole day excursions to explore flora, fauna, geology, mountain forestry and farming and cheese-making.

In winter, Griesalp is accessible on foot from Tschingel. After refreshments at one of the inns an even more refreshing sledge ride back down to the valley beckons.

Highlights

  • Mountain Farming and Nature Theme Path Kiental-Griesalp – interesting and varied theme path with many highlights and 20 information points.
  • Tschingelsee below Griesalp – lake that appeared in 1972 after severe flooding and is beginning to dry out. A nature conservation area.
  • Post bus route to Griesalp – the small post buses overcome hairpin bends and gradients of up to 28%.
