Weisstannen

The, narrow mountain winds steeply up through tall fir forests to the peaceful, remote Weisstannental. No hectic or through traffic here, just idyllic nature, the babbling Seez, Alpine pastures and great hiking.
The Weisstannental with the two villages Schwendi and Weisstannen is a valley community in the Sargans region and part of the Heidiland tourism region. As remote as the valley may seem, it has a long history. Bronze Age finds are evidence of early settlement, geographical names indicate that the first inhabitants were Rhaetians and old buildings tell of the Walsers who followed.

An old sawmill on the village stream at Weisstannen has been brought back to life and can be visited, a herb garden has been planted next to it. Im «Bachhüsli» delicious bread is baked in a wood-fired oven and on Alp Siez aromatic alp cheese is made at the show dairy. Guests can catch their own trout at the Schwendi trout farm (April to October). Fresh mountain-spring water is directed into the breeding ponds.

This remote valley with its waterfalls holds many scenic attractions and is clearly an invitation to hike and enjoy nature. Eagles and ibex are other local attractions. The hike over the lengthy Foopass to Elm in the Glarus Region is almost an insider’s tip. The climb to Foo-Alp and on to the pass is steep in places, but the views to the Glarus Alps from the pass summit are well worth the effort.

Especially in winter, the Weisstannental is transformed into a fabulous fairyland. Forest and high mountains blanketed in deep snow are ideal for ski tours and cross-country skiing. And if snow conditions allow, Wiesstannen also runs a small skiing area, compact, inexpensive and ideal for families with children! Illuminated runs even make night-time skiing possible. Those seeking a challenge will find it with ice climbing.

Highlights

  • Waterfalls in Weisstannental - in summer an impressive sight, in winter popular for ice climbing.
  • Foopass - low, lesser-known crossing from Weisstannental to the Glarus Sernftal. Wonderful views.
