Matterhorn-Trail

Zermatt (Schwarzsee)–Zermatt

Enlarged map

Photo gallery
A tour off the beaten track of the mountain railway bustle, in view of the impressive Matterhorn north face. Enjoy the views of the Obergabelhorn and Dent Blanche while traversing the Stafelalpe toward the Zmutt reservoir. Return to Zermatt via the Zmutt hamlet.
The point of departure for this hike is the Schwarzsee, accessible with the Matterhorn-Express in only 12 minutes. The Matterhorn is within your grasp. Enjoy the idyllic mood of the crystal-clear lake and the chapel called "Maria zum Schnee" with its lovely legend.

The trail continues downwards through alpine pastures toward Obere Stafelalp to a beautifully located restaurant boasting magnificent views of the impressive Matterhorn north face and the Zmuttgrad. Take the shady slope and descend toward the valley with views of the Obergabelhorn and Dent Blanche. On your left you can see the moraine of the receding Zmutt Glacier.

At the lower Stafelalp, the only alp in Zermatt with an operational alpine dairy, the trail turns into a road that you follow until you reach the reservoir of Zmutt (part of the Grande Dixence). Continue along the dam to reach the other side of the valley and, after a few minutes, Zmutt, a typical old hamlet with a white chapel and two cosy restaurants. From here, continue over pastures and then through the forest until you reach Zermatt.
